Luton’s next phase of town centre transformation has been set in motion with the unveiling of a new action plan designed to build on the 2021 masterplan. Backed by £1.7 billion in public and private investment, the initiative outlines ambitious proposals to create a vibrant, welcoming and connected town centre.

Key developments include a new entrance and improved facilities at Luton railway station, a major redesign of St George’s Square, and the pedestrianisation of Bute Street, Chapel Street and St Mary’s Road to encourage walking and cycling. The plan also supports the town’s cultural growth, with proposals for The Stage—a new 600-capacity venue and public square—set to enhance Luton’s creative landscape.

Building on recent successes such as Hat Gardens, where a section of the River Lea has been uncovered to create a green, riverside pocket park, the plan will continue the river’s revival by deculverting further areas in Silver Street, near the Central Library, and in front of the Galaxy Centre.

The project also looks ahead to the arrival of the new Power Court Stadium, ensuring the surrounding area, including St Mary’s Church and a new waterside square, is ready to welcome thousands of visitors.

Together, these developments mark a major step forward in delivering a town centre that residents, students, and visitors can be proud to call their own.
