Luton has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for a seventh year in succession, recognising the town’s commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and vibrant evening and night-time economy.
The internationally recognised Purple Flag standard celebrates destinations that provide a diverse and enjoyable experience between 5pm and 5am while prioritising safety, wellbeing and effective partnership working. The accreditation places Luton among an elite group of locations across the UK and beyond that have demonstrated excellence in managing their evening and night-time offer.
The successful accreditation reflects the collaborative efforts of Luton BID, Luton Council, Bedfordshire Police, local businesses and a range of partners working together to enhance the town centre experience for residents, visitors and employees.
Key achievements highlighted within the assessment include the return of the SOS Bus, providing vital support and safeguarding for those enjoying the town’s evening economy, and the continued success of the Safe Radio Scheme, which enables effective communication between businesses, CCTV operators and emergency services.
The accreditation also recognises initiatives designed to improve the environment and perception of the town centre, including the Creative Shopfront Improvement Scheme, which has brought together local businesses and artists to transform vacant units and enhance the visitor experience. In addition, the work undertaken by the Night Time Economy Scrutiny Task and Finish Group, including extensive stakeholder engagement and a series of recommendations to support the sector, demonstrated a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
Luton BID has played a significant role in supporting the town’s evening and night-time economy through investment in business engagement, town centre safety initiatives and projects designed to create a more attractive and welcoming environment.
Luton BID Chair, Gavin O’Brien, said:
“Receiving Purple Flag accreditation once again is a fantastic achievement for Luton and reflects the strong partnership working that takes place across the town. It recognises the dedication of our businesses, public services and community partners in creating a town centre that is safe, welcoming and vibrant after dark.
At the same time, we’re realistic about the challenges that remain within Luton’s night-time economy. There is still more to be done to improve perceptions, support businesses and enhance the experience for visitors. At Luton BID, we’re passionate about driving those improvements and working with our partners to ensure the town centre continues to evolve and meet the needs of the people who use it.
We’re proud of this recognition, but even more excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue working together to make Luton an even better destination.”
Cllr Aslam Khan, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Inclusive Growth at Luton Council, said:
“Retaining Purple Flag accreditation is a welcome recognition of the work being done by the council, Luton BID and other key partners to improve the town centre and its evening and night-time economy.
We know there are still challenges to address, but this accreditation is a positive indication of the progress being made. We remain committed to working with our partners to build on that progress and make Luton a safer, more welcoming and vibrant place to spend time after dark.”
Purple Flag destinations are independently assessed against a range of criteria, including wellbeing, movement, appeal, place and policy. The accreditation provides reassurance that visitors can expect a high-quality experience, supported by strong safety measures and a diverse range of leisure, hospitality and cultural opportunities.
The award reinforces Luton’s reputation as a destination that is committed to creating a thriving evening economy and building confidence among businesses, residents and visitors for years to come.
