Luton town centre has been awarded the prestigious ‘Purple Flag’ accreditation for a third year for its vibrant evening and night-time economy.

The Purple Flag is awarded to areas for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Luton Business Improvement District (BID) funded the Purple Flag application and joint-led the process with Luton Borough Council.

Judges from the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) praised Luton’s submission and for the comprehensive business support provided during the Covid pandemic, the level of partnership through multiple projects, and the food and dining offer in the Purple Flag area.

The Purple Flag is similar to the ‘Green Flag’ for parks and ‘Blue Flag’ for beaches, and aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of night time offers in town and city centres.

Luton town centre was first awarded Purple Flag status in 2018 and it was renewed in 2019. The latest award focused on the town’s diverse live music and food venues open between 5pm and midnight.

Julia Horsman, Luton BID Manager, said: “We are very proud to be flying the Purple Flag for a third year and are aware that we need to continue to work to address the challenges that businesses and visitors face, and support and build on the offer we have with our evening entertainment and culture in a safe and welcoming environment.”

Cllr Maria Lovell, portfolio holder for Inclusive Economy added: “This renewal really is excellent news and it demonstrates the success of the collaborative work across the town centre during the pandemic to keep businesses running and operating safely for residents. We’ve also shown again that Luton has a varied choice of dining, entertainment and events for all ages, lifestyles and cultures both during the day and at night, and that we provide a safe, vibrant and diverse environment that residents can enjoy.”
